According to Variety Captain Marvel will be helmed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, a duo that also directed 2015 drama Mississippi Grind starring Ryan Reynolds.
Anticipation is building for the big debut of Captain Marvel in Avengers: Infinity War, especially now that fans know the duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will be helming the character's solo outing. The studio has been taking their time finding just the right people to take over the project, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is quite happy with their choice.
Speaking to Fandango, Feige elaborated on that original statement, once again emphasizing how important the focus on the character of Carol Danvers is to Captain Marvel:
“We met with lots and lots of people as we always do, and had multiple meetings, and Anna and Ryan just had an amazing way of talking about Carol Danvers and talking about her journey. We want filmmakers that can help us focus on and elevate the character journey so it doesn’t get lost amongst the spectacle. And there’s going to be a lot of spectacle in the Captain Marvel film.
“We’re pretty good at that at Marvel Studios, and have an amazing team that can help with that. But when we’re filling a director chair or chairs, we want people who are focused on the emotional journey, the humor, the surprising twists and turns of a singular character journey, which is what Captain Marvel is. They had the best handle on it. And when you look at the work that Ryan and Anna have done in the past, they are all amazing and very diverse character studies and journeys, and that impressed us.”
Brie Larson is set to star as the titular character in Marvel Studios’ first female-centric superhero film. The script is being co-written by “Inside Out” writer Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman, who co-wrote “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Captain Marvel is set to open on March 8th 2019.
Next up for Marvel is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5, 2017. Spider-Man: Homecoming lands on July 7, 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel.
